 2016 Preview 


       St. Clair County finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year St. Clair County finished seventh in Class 5A region six with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       Since 2010, St. Clair County has gone a combined 28-35. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 5A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, St. Clair County has managed to compile a record of 151-121. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 5A and 123rd in the AHSAA.

       The Fighting Saints are led by head coach Lance Smith who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 6-14 over the past two seasons at St. Clair County. The Fighting Saints have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith.

       Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 22-29 (43.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time .

       The St. Clair County Fighting Saints will play in Class 5A region five during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Fighting Saints remain in 5A but move from region six over to region five.

       The Fighting Saints enter the 2016 season in the middle of a 7 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

       It will be an uphill battle for the Fighting Saints if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season.

       The Fighting Saints open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Lincoln on Friday, August 26 at St. Clair Stadium. Last year the Lincoln Golden Bears finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 5A region six. The Golden Bears ended last season on a positive note with a win over Childersburg by a score of 44-13 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       St. Clair County and Lincoln have met a total of 25 times on the football field. The Fighting Saints have a 9-15-1 record against the Golden Bears. They last met in 2015 with St. Clair County winning by a score of 20-14.
